Life Coach vs Therapist in South Africa: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

Both coaching and therapy can be transformative. But they're not the same — and knowing the difference helps you choose the right support for your specific situation.

The key distinction: past vs future

Therapy typically explores the past to understand and heal how it affects the present. Life coaching focuses on the present and future — helping you identify what you want, what's in the way, and how to move forward.

Therapy: what it is and when you need it

Therapy is facilitated by a registered mental health professional — a psychologist, psychiatrist, or counsellor. It's the appropriate support when you're dealing with:

  • Diagnosed or suspected mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.)
  • Trauma processing
  • Significant relationship dysfunction rooted in past patterns
  • Crisis intervention
  • Medication management (psychiatry)

In South Africa, psychologists must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Life coaching: what it is and when you need it

Coaching is appropriate when you are fundamentally mentally healthy but:

  • Feeling stuck, directionless, or burned out
  • Navigating a career or life transition
  • Looking for accountability and structured forward movement
  • Wanting to improve performance, clarity, or decision-making
  • Need a thinking partner — not a diagnostician

Can you do both?

Absolutely — and many people do. Therapy and coaching address different layers of the same life. Many of our clients work with both a therapist and a life coach simultaneously, with each supporting a different dimension of their growth.

Important note

If you are in mental health crisis, please reach out to the SA Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) on 0800 456 789 or a registered mental health professional. Life coaching is not crisis support and is not a substitute for clinical care.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is life coaching covered by medical aid in South Africa?
No. Life coaching is not a registered health profession and is not covered by medical aid. Therapy with a registered psychologist may be partially covered depending on your plan.
Can a life coach help with anxiety?
A life coach can help you manage the practical and cognitive dimensions of stress and overwhelm. However, if you have a diagnosed anxiety disorder, a registered therapist or psychologist is the appropriate primary support.
